Cranberry Moscow Mule
Few classic cocktails command a room quite like a Moscow Mule served icy cold in a copper mug. But when fall and winter roll around, this Cranberry Moscow Mule takes everything you love about a Moscow Mule and infuses it with bright, tart cranberries, turning a reliable staple into a festive favorite.

The brilliance of this cocktail is letting the raw, tart power of fresh whole cranberries take center stage, rather than hiding behind sugary store-bought juices. We muddle the fresh berries with half an ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice, adding their full flavor directly to the cocktail.
Paired with three ounces of crisp, clean vodka and topped with fiery, quality ginger beer, it creates a striking crimson cocktail with a sharp bite, spicy effervescence, and an incredibly refreshing finish.

- Vodka: The clean, neutral high-proof spirit foundation. It provides the crisp alcoholic backbone without competing against the delicate cranberry or ginger notes.
- Fresh Cranberries: The seasonal heart of the drink. Muddling whole fresh cranberries releases juices and natural red pigments for vibrant color and tart flavor.
- Fresh Lime Juice: The essential citrus acid. Lime sharpens the cranberries’ astringency, cuts the sweetness of the ginger beer, and delivers quintessential Mule vibes.
- Ginger Beer: The effervescent, spicy mixer. It provides carbonation to lift aromatics to the surface and introduces warming ginger root heat and sweetness to round out the tart fruit.
- Ice (Preferably Crushed): Rapidly chills the spirit and fruit while controlling dilution as you pour the fizzy ginger beer over the top.
- Garnish (Fresh Mint Leaves & Lime): Aromatic anchors. Slapping the mint awakens menthol oils that greet your nose before the first sip, while the fresh lime wedge reinforces citrus brightness.
How to make a Cranberry Moscow Mule:
Prep the Glassware: Fill a traditional copper mug (or highball glass) with crushed ice and set aside to frost. Set aside.
Muddle the Fruit: In the base of a cocktail shaker (paid link), add the fresh cranberries and fresh lime juice. Muddle firmly for 20 to 30 seconds until the cranberries burst open and release their juices into the lime.

Add the Vodka: Pour in the vodka. Shake vigorously for 10 to 12 seconds.
Strain Over Ice: Strain the liquid through a strainer (or double-strain into a fine-mesh strainer). Pour into your prepared copper mug packed with fresh crushed ice (discard the pressed cranberry skins and seeds, or leave a few crushed berries in the mug for rustic texture if preferred).

Top with Ginger Beer: Top the mug with cold ginger beer, pouring gently to preserve the effervescence. Stir once very gently with a bar spoon (paid link) to combine.

Aromatic Garnish: Slap a sprig of fresh mint across the back of your hand to release its essential oils and tuck it against the rim, or add a fresh lime wheel alongside a few floating whole cranberries. Serve immediately.

Tips
- Use Real Ginger Beer, Not Ginger Ale: Ginger ale is overly sweet and lacks the pungent ginger root heat needed to balance the tart fresh cranberries and lime. Look for spicy, craft-brewed ginger beers.
- Muddling Trick: Whole fresh cranberries are firm and can roll around the shaker. Pressing them firmly against the flat bottom with a muddler until they “pop” ensures maximum juice extraction. If they are particularly firm, you can roughly chop them with a knife beforehand.
- Spiced Holiday Mule: Swap regular vodka for spiced rum, bourbon (a Kentucky Mule variation), or botanical gin to add deeper holiday caramel and herbal undertones.
- Sweetened Version: If fresh cranberries are too tart for your palate, add ½ oz pure maple syrup or simple syrup to the shaker before muddling.
- Herbal Infusion: Add 3ā4 fresh rosemary needles or mint leaves into the base to muddle alongside the cranberries for an earthy, piney aroma.
- Cranberry Juice Shortcut: If fresh cranberries are out of season, swap them for 4 oz of 100% unsweetened pure cranberry juice (avoid cranberry cocktail concentrate, which contains excessive corn syrup).
- Batching for Parties: Multiply the cranberries, lime juice, and vodka for a crowd and blend them briefly in a food processor (paid link). Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher (paid link) and keep chilled in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When guests arrive, pour over ice in mugs and top each with fresh, cold ginger beer.
