Apple Cinnamon Mule cocktail

Your traditional Moscow mule is made with vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice and you’ll most likely see it serviced in a copper mug, which makes the cocktail look great and keeps it nice and cold. But I made a few small tweaks to bring this cocktail into Fall.

The great thing about a Moscow mule is its versatility. With such a simple “base” of ingredients, the world is your oyster. And to build on what’s already a great drink, adding apple cider and a few spices. It may sound like a tiny change, but it really puts the “holidays” in this cocktail.

The apple cider pairs perfectly with the spicy ginger beer, and the cinnamon and nutmeg add even more flavor. I’ve even provided a quick recipe for an optional cinnamon simple syrup for those that like their cocktails a bit sweeter. This is completely optional, and your Mosco mule would be perfect without it, but both renditions are great!

To Make Apple Cinnamon Moscow Mules:

  1. The first step is to create your spiced simple syrup. You’ll simmer simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water) with cinnamon sticks.
  2. Add your vodka, apple cider, lime juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and syrup (optional) to a cocktail shaker and shake for 15 seconds.
  3. Fill your copper mug with ice, pour your cocktail over the ice, and top with ginger beer.
  4. Garnish with sliced apples, a cinnamon stick, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Since vodka takes on the flavor of any ingredient added to it, I would recommend not investing too much money on high-end vodka. When it comes to blended cocktails, any decent vodka will do. My favorite vodka is Tito’s, Wheatley, and Ivanabitch.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 oz. vodka
  • 3 oz. apple cider
  • dash ground cinnamon
  • dash ground nutmeg
  • dash fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz. spiced simple syrup, optional
  • ginger beer

For the spiced simple syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. For the simple syrup, add the sugar and water in a small saucepot. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Add cinnamon sticks. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 10 minutes until the syrup thickens.
  2. Remove the pot from the heat and allow the syrup to cool completely. Discard cinnamon sticks. Syrup can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator and used as needed.

  4. Add ice to the mule cocktail mug and pour the cocktail over the ice. Top off with ginger beer.
  5. Garnish with sliced apples and cinnamon sticks.
