Beer Battered Cod with Sriracha Tartar Sauce

This particular recipe was inspired by a weekend vacation to Seattle. We went to a place that served great beer and great bar food, but the item that caught my attention was the fried fish. The cod was so tasty that I had to come home and give it a try — and as usual, with a little twist.

With a little trial and error, I was able to come up with a recipe I think is worthy of sharing. Today, I share my version of Beer Battered Cod with my homemade Sriracha Tartar Sauce.

Beer Battered Cod with Sriracha Tartar Sauce

It is important to try to get fresh cod from your local grocer or market because nothing beats the taste and flakiness of fresh fish. Aside from the delicious cod, the batter I use is quite different from the norm.

Making the Beer Battered Cod with Sriracha Tartar Sauce:

You want to begin by cutting your 2 lb cod filet into 6 pieces. Season each piece of cod evenly then lightly coat with flour.

Add the pancake mix (paid link), flour and nutmeg into a large bowl and whisk (paid link) until blended. Crack an egg into the mixture, then pour half of the beer needed and whisk (paid link).

Now, most pancake mix (paid link) is simply a blend of flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar and I use it to add a little sweetness. Feel free to substitute this ingredient with regular all-purpose flour.

Slowly add the remaining beer to the mixture until the consistency is slightly thick but not as thick as your typical pancake mix (paid link).

Add your cooking oil into a frying pan and make sure the oil is hot before adding in your fish. Dip your fish into the batter, making sure each piece is completely coated, then add to the hot oil.

Cook each piece of cod for 4 minutes on each side then remove from heat placing them on a paper towel and/or elevated cooling rack.

There is a slight sweetness to the batter due to my combination of pancake mix (paid link), nutmeg and beer (I use a beer that has a distinctive hop taste like an IPA beer for this recipe). I told you it was a little different. 🙂

The dipping sauce brings some life and kick to the party with Sriracha sauce mixed into my homemade tartar. Simply add all ingredients into a bowl and mix well until smooth. This recipe can be enjoyed any day and will go well with your favorite brew. When you are having a taste for a good fried fish recipe give this Beer Battered Cod a spot on your dinner table!
