- The BBQ sauce used in this recipe is simply an enhanced version of your favorite store-bought brand. You’ll start with regular BBQ sauce and add honey, Dijon mustard, ground cumin, and minced garlic. If you are using a sweet BBQ sauce, you can omit the honey.
- For the shredded chicken, I use store-bought rotisserie chicken. If you have leftover cooked chicken, that would work great as well — just dice or shred it.
- You’ll mix your chicken with full-fat cream cheese, ranch dressing, cheddar cheese, and green onions.
- The additional flavor comes by way of the cilantro flakes, smoked paprika, chili powder, black pepper, and sea salt.
How to make BBQ Chicken Dip:
Preheat the oven. Set oven to 375 degrees.
Make the BBQ sauce. In a small cooking pot, add your BBQ sauce, honey, Dijon mustard, ground cumin, and minced garlic on low heat. Stir occasionally until the sauce begins to bubble slightly, then remove from the heat. This should take 3 to 5 minutes.
Mix ingredients. In a large bowl, add the shredded chicken, 2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese, cream cheese, ranch dressing, chopped green onion, minced garlic, cilantro flakes, smoked paprika, chili powder, black pepper, sea salt, and the prepared BBQ sauce. Mix well with a large fork until combined.

Add ingredients to the casserole dish (paid link). Add ingredients to a large casserole dish (paid link) and spread evenly. Top off the mixture with the remaining cheddar cheese.
Bake the dip. Place the baking pan in the oven for 18 – 20 minutes. Serve immediately with tortilla chips and celery sticks.

Tips & Tricks
- Set out the cream cheese ahead of time to allow it to come to room temperature. It is much easier to mix cream cheese when it’s not too cold.
- You can use any barbecue sauce that you like! For this recipe, where I am adding honey, I start with Kinder’s Original BQ Sauce. If you start with a sweeter BBQ sauce (you would remove the extra honey in the recipe ingredients), I recommend Sweet Baby Ray’s Barbecue Sauce.
- You can switch up the cheeses, too! I use sharp cheddar as it pairs well with tangy BBQ sauce, but Monterrey Jack, Pepper Jack, and mozzarella are also great options.
- This dip can be made 1-2 days in advance! Just assemble the dip and add it to your baking dish, and cover with plastic wrap. Or, add the mixture to an airtight container and refrigerate. When it’s time to bake, remove it from the fridge, uncover it, and follow the baking instructions.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days and reheated in the microwave.
Because BBQ Chicken Dip is so easy to make and feeds a crowd, serve it at your next football party, and it is sure to become a fan favorite.
