Ingredients
- 2 oz Scotch whisky
- 1/4 oz Cointreau
- 1 oz apple juice
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 oz agave syrup
- Ice, for shaking and serving
- 1 oz chilled ginger ale
- Freshly grated cinnamon, for garnish
Instructions
- Fill a Collins glass with ice and set it aside while you build the drink.
- Add the Scotch, Cointreau, apple juice, lemon juice, and agave syrup to a cocktail shaker (paid link).
- Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice, seal it, and shake hard for 10 to 12 seconds, until the outside of the tin is frosty and cold to the touch.
- Dump the chilling ice from the Collins glass, refill it with fresh ice, and strain the cocktail into the glass.
- Gently pour the chilled ginger ale over the top. Give it one slow stir with a bar spoon (paid link) to fold the bubbles through without knocking them out.
- Hold a cinnamon stick over the glass and grate a light dusting of cinnamon across the surface. Serve immediately.
Notes
Squeeze your lemon fresh. Bottled lemon juice tastes dull and slightly bitter. Fresh juice adds sparkle, and one lemon is enough for two or three cocktails.
Use cloudy apple juice or cider for more depth. Unfiltered apple juice or fresh apple cider brings a richer, rounder, more orchard-like flavor than clear juice.
Grate the cinnamon; don’t shake it from a jar. Grating a cinnamon stick over a microplane releases fresh oils that smell far more vibrant than pre-ground cinnamon. If you only have ground cinnamon, use a tiny pinch so it doesn’t clump on the surface.
Pick your Scotch on purpose. A smooth blended Scotch keeps things approachable. For a smoky, campfire twist, swap ½ oz of the Scotch for a peated Islay whisky.
No agave? Use what you have. Simple syrup or honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water, stirred and cooled) works well. Honey pairs especially well with Scotch.
Swap the orange liqueur. Grand Marnier or triple sec can replace Cointreau. Grand Marnier adds a deeper, cognac-rich note.
Turn up the ginger. Use ginger beer instead of ginger ale for a spicier, sharper finish, or add a thin coin of fresh ginger to the shaker.
No shaker? No problem. A clean jar with a tight lid works just as well.
Taste and adjust. Apple juice sweetness varies by brand. If the drink tastes too sweet, add a few more drops of lemon; if it’s too tart, add a touch more agave.
